Pamper your pet with our pick of the new breed of glam animal accessories.
While cats and dogs in the country may have more fields to frolic in, mud to roll in' and wildlife to chase, city pets get far better style privileges. A host of design-led boutiques, selling chichi beds, clever toys and even fashion and jewellery, are springing up to cater to our increased desire to spoil our furry friends.
Leading the pack is new Belgravia store Mungo & Maud, self proclaimed 'dog and cat outfitters', where you can treat your pet to a hand-stitched collar, vintage feeding bowl or exquisitely packaged organic titbits (and pick up a cosy blanket or new bag for yourself, to boot). Designed by architect Seth Stein, who also kitted out the King's Road branch of clothing store Whistles, the look is all-white walls, reclaimed-wood shelving and French-grey floors (complete with rings for tethering visiting hounds). Hot on its heels is Selfridges' freshly revamped pet concession, offering cashmere dog jumpers, personalised diamante and leather collars, doggy cushions and I a jewellery cabinet full of crystal-trimmed leads.
But what's the thinking behind this new, chic approach to shopping for your animal companion? 'People now want well designed pet products that fit in with their homes and sense of style: says Nicola Sacher, owner of Mungo & Maud. 'Plus, there's a great connection between humans and animals, so it's only natural to want to give your pet the best quality of life:
We couldn't agree more. There's nothing wrong with showering affection on your loved ones, even if they do have four legs and a coat of fur. And besides, if you give your critter exciting toys, he or she might just prefer them to chewing the furniture. Which is good news for anyone who can't choose between puppy love and a well -kept home.
